No Ordinary Summer

Meet Charlie, a first-time Camp America participant from Northamptonshire, England, who is spending his summer coaching football (soccer) at Chestnut Lake Camp. Discover why he chose to leave his comfort zone, how he's sharing his passion for the game with campers, and why meeting people from around the world has made his camp experience life-changing.

What Is It Like to Be a Football Coach at a Summer Camp in America?

Meet Charlie from Northamptonshire, England, who is spending his first summer at Chestnut Lake Camp as a Football (Soccer) Specialist through Camp America.

After finishing university, Charlie wanted something different from another summer spent at home. Looking for adventure, personal growth, and a new challenge, he decided to leave his comfort zone and spend the summer working at a camp in the USA.

Why Did Charlie Choose Camp America?

Like many participants, Charlie wanted more than a typical summer job. He was looking for an experience that would push him to try something new, meet new people, and spend time doing something he genuinely enjoys.

Moving to a new country and working at camp gave him the opportunity to challenge himself, gain new experiences, and immerse himself in a completely different environment.

What Does a Football Coach Do at Camp?

As a Football (Soccer) Specialist, Charlie spends his days teaching campers the skills, techniques, and teamwork involved in the world's most popular sport.

Having played football for 16 years and coached for four, he's able to share his passion with campers through coaching sessions, games, drills, and fun activities designed to help children learn and develop their skills.

Is Every Day the Same at Camp?

Not at all.

One of Charlie's favourite things about camp is that every day is different. Whether he's coaching football, taking part in camp traditions, joining spontaneous activities, or dancing during lunch, there's always something unexpected happening around camp.

It's this variety and energy that makes camp such a unique place to spend the summer.

The Best Part of Working at Camp

For Charlie, the people have made the biggest impact.

From fellow international staff and American counsellors to campers and camp leaders, he's built connections with people from different backgrounds and experiences. The friendships and relationships formed at camp have become one of the most rewarding parts of his summer.
