The Camp America Application Process Explained - The Summer Camp Rookie Ep. 5

What is Camp America and why do so many people return year after year? In the first episode of The Summer Camp Rookie, the team explores what summer camp in America is really like, how people discover the programme, and why so many participants describe it as a life-changing experience.

What Is Camp America?

If you've never heard of Camp America before, you're not alone. Many people discover the programme through friends, family members, social media, university events, or simply by stumbling across stories from people who've spent a summer working at camp. In this episode of The Summer Camp Rookie, we answer one of the most common questions we hear: What actually is Camp America?

What does Camp America do?

Camp America helps people aged 18+ work at summer camps across the USA. Participants spend their summer supporting children, leading activities, teaching skills, and becoming part of a camp community while living and working alongside people from around the world. Since 1969, the programme has connected thousands of international staff with American summer camps.

What is a summer camp in America really like?

American summer camps are often exactly what people imagine from the movies. Days are filled with activities such as swimming, sports, hiking, arts and crafts, waterfront activities, campfires, colour wars, outdoor adventures, and community events. Campers live together in cabins, spend most of their time outdoors, and become part of a close-knit camp community.

While every camp is different, the goal is the same: creating an environment where children can learn, grow, have fun, and build confidence. International staff play a huge role in making that happen.

Why do people choose Camp America?

For some participants, Camp America has been part of their family story for generations. Others discover it through social media, friends, films, or a desire to spend a summer doing something different. What many have in common is a desire to travel, challenge themselves, meet new people, and experience life outside their comfort zone.

Many participants say they arrive expecting an adventure but leave with far more than that. They build confidence, develop leadership skills, make lifelong friendships, and gain experiences that continue to shape their lives long after summer ends.

What do Camp America participants do?

Roles vary from camp to camp, but participants may:

  • Work directly with children as camp counsellors
  • Teach sports, outdoor activities, or creative skills
  • Support waterfront and adventure programmes
  • Lead activities and cabin groups
  • Help create memorable experiences for campers
  • Develop leadership, communication, and teamwork skills

Many participants spend their days guiding children through activities, supporting their personal growth, and helping create the unique atmosphere that summer camp is known for.

Why do people keep going back?

One of the themes that comes up repeatedly in this episode is how difficult camp can be to explain to someone who hasn't experienced it. Participants talk about the friendships they make, the impact they have on children, the sense of community, and the feeling of escaping everyday life for a summer. Many return year after year because camp becomes a place where they feel challenged, supported, and completely themselves.

Whether you're completely new to Camp America or already considering applying, this episode offers an honest introduction to what camp is, why people love it, and what makes the experience so memorable.
